April - November 2011The Spirit of America in the Heritage of Batik
ABOUT "AMERICAN BATIK" DESIGN COMPETITIONThe Indonesian Embassy in Washington D.C. and Indonesian Consulate Generals in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston are proud to launch a competition on "AMERICAN BATIK" DESIGN with the theme
"The Spirit of America in the Heritage of Batik" to bring American values in the tradition of Indonesian Batik. The "AMERICAN BATIK" DESIGN COMPETITION (ABDC) is part of the efforts to strengthen Indonesian. United States cultural relations in the spirit of the
"Joint Declaration on the Comprehensive Partnership between the Republic of Indonesia and the United States of America" announced by the Head of States of the two countries in Jakarta, on November 9, 2010.
The word Batik is originally an Indonesian-Malay word which means to dot. The term Batik usually refers to two meanings namely a way of painting and coloring textile using the traditional practice of dying cloth through wax resist method; and textile/garment with distinct pattern. This art of designing textile is widely spread in the Hindu and Malay world and has become the part of cultural identity. The tradition of Batik is very popular and well maintained as well as nurtured not only in the Island of Java, but also across the Indonesian Archipelago.
Batik always has a special place in the cultural life of Indonesians, and in October 2009, UNESCO has acknowledged and positioned Batik of Indonesia in UNESCO's Representative List of the "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity".
The main purpose of this competition is to make Batik goes global. At the same time, this competition will promote Indonesian cultural heritage through Batik to the American people and bring closer the Indonesian creative culture to American innovative popular culture. It is expected that this competition will facilitate the creation of Batik designs or pattern with the touch of American values and spirit. Hopefully, this competition will also bring about Indonesian Batik as fashion reference and commodity to the United States and the world.
PRIZES
The competition offers total prize money for 3 winners and favorite designs.
JUDGES AND PROCESS OF COMPETITION
Judges will consist of Batik and textile experts as well as fashion designers and
representatives of fashion industries from Indonesia and the U.S. The selection of winners will follow four steps:
- Registration and Submission of digital designs. The 50 best American batik designs will be selected as semi finalists.
- Semi-final. 20 best designs will be selected as finalists and will be exhibited at the Indonesian Festival, July 9 in DC. These 20 designs will then be made into Batik Textiles in Indonesia, and the winners will be announced at the final session.
- Final selection. The 20 batik textiles will be reviewed by the judges. 3 winners and 3 runner up winners will be selected.
ELIGIBILITY TO ENTER THE COMPETITIONParticipants interested in taking part in this competition must be a U.S. citizen with minimum age of 16 years at the time of registration. Participants will be required to submit online one Batik design through digital portfolio/media. At the semi and final session, preselected participants will be required to provide the printed products of the earlier submitted design. Students and graduates from School of Arts and Designs (e.g. textile design) are highly encouraged to apply. Interested participants should apply online via www.embassyofindonesia.org

Halo rekan-rekan PWKI di Chicagoland,
PWKI dan KTM North America akan mengadakan retret tanggal
8-10 Oktober di Elburn, IL. Retret ini adalah retret Komunitas Tritunggal MahaKudus (KTM) yang affiliated with Romo Yohanes Lembah Karmel. Retret akan dibawakan oleh 3 orang suster Putri Karmel dari San Francisco dan dibantu oleh Romo-romo kita di Chicago. Musik akan dilayani oleh saudara-saudara kita dari Columbus, Ohio dan Michigan.
Untuk yang belum pernah mendengar mengenai retret KTM, retret ini sangat populer di Indonesia. Retret KTM di Lembah Karmel bisa dihadiri ratusan orang, dan kadang sampai ribuan orang. Jadi ini kesempatan yang jarang ada untuk bisa ikut retret KTM tanpa perlu travel jauh dan suasana retret bisa akrab karena jumlah peserta retretnya tidak sebanyak di Indonesia. Harap dimanfaatkan karena ini kesempatan yang langka untuk pertumbuhan iman Katolik kita.
Retret dimulai dari Jumat malam sampai minggu siang. Biaya retret $100/adult (after 15 September: $120/adult) dan $30/child (under 7 years old). Untuk yang berminat ikut retret, diharapkan segera mendaftar supaya bisa di-finalize headcount-nya. Ini akan sangat membantu panitia retret untuk mengatur jumlah kamar dan konsumsi untuk peserta retret.

Upacara dan Syukuran Peringatan HUT RI ke-65 di Chicago Masyarakat Indonesia beserta keluarga besar KJRI Chicago merayakan HUT RI ke-65 dengan menggelar upacara peringatan detik-detik proklamasi kemerdekaan RI di Wisma Konsul Jenderal RI Chicago pada tanggal 17 Agustus 2010 pagi hari dan acara Syukuran yang diadakan malam harinya saat berbuka puasa.
Upacara berlangsung dengan tertib dan hikmat dipimpin oleh Konsul Jenderal RI Chicago, Benny Bahanadewa sebagai Pembina Upacara dan Sekretaris Ketiga Ekonomi, Sunan J. Rustam sebagai Pemimpin Upacara.
Upacara kali ini dihadiri oleh sekitar 150 orang masyarakat Indonesia yang berdomisili di wilayah Greater Chicago dan wilayah Midwest AS lainnya, antara lain Wisconsin, Michigan, Milwakee, dan Ohio.
Dalam amanatnya, Konsul Jenderal RI Chicago antara lain menyampaikan kemajuan-kemajuan yang telah dicapai oleh pemerintah Indonesia di berbagai bidang dalam kurun waktu satu tahun terakhir, perkembangan hubungan bilateral RI – AS dan peningkatan kinerja KJRI Chicago melalui berbagai kegiatan yang dilakukan dalam upaya memperjuangkan kepentingan nasional Indonesia di berbagai bidang.
Konjen juga mengimbau masyarakat dan mahasiswa Indonesia di luar negeri, khususnya di Chicago dan Midwest AS untuk turut serta berperan aktif dalam upaya memajukan perekonomian Indonesia dan meningkatkan citra positif Indonesia di luar negeri.
Pada akhir upacara diberikan penghargaan dan hadiah bagi pemenang perlombaan olahraga yang diselenggarakan 10 Juli 2010 yang lalu dalam rangka peringatan HUT RI ke-65.Malam harinya diadakan acara Syukuran Peringatan HUT RI ke-65 yang dibarengi dengan acara buka puasa bersama dan dihadiri oleh sekitar 200 orang masyarakat Indonesia, diantaranya termasuk beberapa pemerhati Indonesia.
Selain acara syukuran dan buka puasa bersama, bagi umat Muslim dilakukan teraweh bersama dan siraman rohani yang disampaikan oleh Ustad Shamsi Ali yang menjabat sebagai Imam di Masjid Al-Hikmah di New York . Rangkaian Perayaan HUT RI ke-65 yang kali ini bertepatan dengan bulan puasa berlangsung dalam suasana gembira, akrab dan penuh ikatan rasa kekeluargaan. (Sumber: KJRI Chicago)
